Frank Papy Woodward (1873-1939) was a prominent Tallahassee citizen who established himself as a writer and poet. He had a long career as a state employee in various capacities, including a thirty-year period with the state Department of Agriculture, but Woodward was primarily recognized for his writing. He penned the column "Sez I to Myself," which newspapers throughout Florida published. He also named and opened Woodward Avenue around 1910 on family property.
Frank Papy Woodward was the grandson of Judge Alfred L. Woodward, who settled in Marianna, Jackson County, in 1825 after leaving Georgetown, South Carolina. Judge Woodward was a signer of Florida's first constitution at the First Constitutional Convention in St. Joseph in 1838. He moved to Tallahassee in 1850 with his wife, Anna S. Bowers and sons, William Woodruff Woodward and Alfred L. Woodward, Jr. William taught in Leon County schools and later became Superintendent of Public Instruction for the county. Before his death in 1890, he served as principal of Leon Academy. Alfred L., Jr. became a Methodist minister; he was married to Mary C. Woodward, with whom he had five children. Of the five, only Frank Papy, reached maturity.
