Biographical/Historical:     Escambia County was created by an act of the Legislative Council on July 21, 1821.  It originally encompassed "all the country lying between the Perdido and Suwaney Rivers."  On February 18, 1842 the Legislative Council created Santa Rosa from a portion of Escambia County.  Thereafter, Escambia County consisted of the land from the Alabama line to the Escambia River.  The Clerk of the Circuit Court in each county serves as the official custodian of deed, marriage, and probate records.
Summary:     This series consists of a microfilm copy of probate records fromEscambia County, Florida, from 1832 to 1972.  The records include will books (1832-1929); order books (1871-1972); estate record books (containing oaths, orders, letters testamentary, and other probate records) (1871-1883); and designations of homesteads (contained in Order Book 1).  Most of the records are indexed.
    Probate is the transfer of property title and rights and of legal responsibility for payment of taxes or custody from the deceased to another party, from a person judged incompetent or insane, or from a minor to an appointed guardian.  Probate records document the administration and distribution of an individual's estate after death.
