The Online Catalog allows searching and browsing of information about the Florida State Archives’ holdings of over 48,000 cubic feet of state and local government records and historical manuscripts. The catalog provides descriptions of over 3,400 collections and lists the contents of containers and folders in many of those collections. Biographical/Historical Note:     The post of Commissioner of Education was established as the Superintendent of Public Instruction under the 1868 Constitution (Article VII, Section 7; Article IV, Section 25, 1885 Constitution). The Superintendent of Public Instruction became the Commissioner of Education under the 1968 Constitution (Article IV, Section 4(g)). The Commissioner was one of the elected Cabinet posts until a 1998 constitutional amendment, effective January 2003, removed the office from the elective Cabinet and changed the composition of the State Board of Education from the Governor and Cabinet to a board appointed by the Governor.
    As a member of the Cabinet, the Commissioner was a member of the Office of Executive Clemency, the Board of Trustees of the Internal Improvement Trust Fund, the Board of Directors of the Canal Authority of the State of Florida, the Administration Commission, the Governor's Committee on Interstate Cooperation (Commission on Interstate Cooperation), the Information Resource Commission, the Florida Land and Water Adjudicatory Commission, and the governing boards of the Departments of Education, General Services, Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, Law Enforcement, Natural Resources, and Revenue.

    The Commissioner was also a member of the Aquaculture Interagency Coordinating Board, the Florida Center for Educational Statistics Advisory Committee, the State Board of Community Colleges, the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission, the Child Welfare Standards and Training Council, the Juvenile Justice Standards and Training Council, the Florida Commission on International Education, the Florida High Technology and Industry Council, the Land Management Advisory Committee, the Board of Regents, and the Coordinating Council on the Transportation Disadvantaged.
