The Online Catalog allows searching and browsing of information about the Florida State Archives’ holdings of over 48,000 cubic feet of state and local government records and historical manuscripts. The catalog provides descriptions of over 3,400 collections and lists the contents of containers and folders in many of those collections. Biographical/Historical Note:   The Department of Education was created in 1969 (Ch. 69-106, Laws of Florida).  It carries out the policies and duties authorized by law or by the State Board of Education.  It is headed by the Commissioner of Education who is the chief educational officer for the state.  It assumed the responsibilities of the State Department of Education (Ch. 19355, Laws) and its predecessor, the Department of Public Instruction (Ch. 1686, Laws). Since 1869, these education departments have supervised public education, kindergarten to graduate, in Florida.
    The post of Commissioner of Education was one of the elected Cabinet posts until January 3, 2003, the effective date of a 1998 constitutional amendment eliminating the office from the Cabinet and making the department responsible to the governor, with the Commissioner of Education position a gubernatorial appointment.  The amendment also changed the composition of the State Board of Education from the Governor and Cabinet to a board appointed by the Governor.
