Biographical/Historical:     The Department of Commerce was created in 1969 (Ch. 69-106, Laws), merging the Florida Development Commission, the Florida Industrial Commission, the State Apprenticeship Council, and the Florida Nuclear and Space Commission. From 1969 to 1972, the Lieutenant Governor served as the Secretary of Commerce. The Department promoted the development of the state in the areas of industry, trade, and tourism.
In 1996 (Ch. 96-320, Laws), the Department of Commerce was abolished. Some of its functions were transferred to the new Office of Tourism, Trade, and Economic Development in the Governor's Office. Other functions were privatized under the new Florida Tourism Industry Marketing Corp. which the law directed the Florida Commission on Tourism to create.
The Direct Support Organization was created by the Florida Legislature in 1993 (Laws, 93-60). It was created as a not-for-profit public/private, i.e. using state and private funds, organization.  Its mission was to act as the primary entity in the Dept. of Commerce's promotion and development of the motion picture, radio, television, video graphic, sound recording, and other related mass media industries operating in Florida.
In 1993 the Board of Directors of the Direct Support Organization (DSO) changed its name to the Florida Entertainment Commission (FEC). The Commission was disbanded in 1996. It was succeeded by a private, i.e. no state funds, not-for-profit organization with the same mission.
Summary:     This series contains correspondence, administrative materials, litigation files, financial records, and quarterly reports from the Florida Entertainment  Commission and the Office of Film and Entertainment. Also included are a number of audio cassettes recording the board meetings of the FEC from 1993 to 1995.
