	Biographical/Historical:	*IN PROCESSING* The Florida Forest Service, within the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, is one of a succession of state offices responsible for overseeing the commercial, industrial, and natural resources of Florida's forests. Established in 1928 to succeed the Florida Board of Forestry, the Florida Forest Service cooperated with federal and state agencies, counties, towns, corporations, and individuals in disseminating information about Florida forests, managing fire prevention and control programs, and enforcing laws pertaining to forests and woodlands. In the 1890s, industries such as turpentine, lumber, and phosphate mining began taking over the forests and agricultural lands along the Withlacoochee River. By the 1930s, these industries had decimated the local ecosystem and ravaged small farming communities, leaving many families without income. In 1935, the Resettlement Administration (RA), a New Deal federal agency, organized to purchase agriculturally depleted land and relocate struggling families to better locations. One of its several projects in the southeast included the worn out lands along the Withlacoochee River. The Withlacoochee Resettlement Land Use Demonstration Project comprised 113,000 acres across four counties, which eventually became the distinct tracts of the Withlacoochee State Forest.

The images depict various sections of the designated area to show the destruction and devastation of the landscape and local communities.
