Biographical/Historical:     The Archibalds were early pioneer settlers in Center Hill, Sumter County, Florida. Family patriarch James McCurdy Archibald was born in Michigan in 1870. By the 1900 Federal Census, he was living in Sumter County, Florida with his mother and some of his siblings. In 1902 he married Margaret "Maggie" Kendrick. James and Maggie had several children, all born in Sumter County: Walter Kendrick (1903-1948), Mary (1904-1972), Bessie Frances "Frankie" (1906-1952), James McCurdy Jr. (1909-1972), and John Beverly (1912-1979).

The Kendrick family primarily lived in Georgia, although some later settled in Florida. Margaret "Maggie" Kendrick was born in Lowndes County, Georgia in 1874 and lived there with her parents until at least 1900. She had several siblings: Mary M, Isham Walker, Elisha Frasier, and William Ashley.

Mary Archibald, the eldest daughter of James and Maggie, married Frank J. Maheu in 1926 in Sumter County. Frank was born in 1895 in Belgium and immigrated to the United States in 1913. Although Mary and Frank had no children of their own, they raised their nieces Margaret Ranelle Archibald and Mary Louise Archibald (Walter Kendrick Archibald's daughters) from a young age. The family later moved to Palm Beach County where they owned and operated a large farm. In 1955 Margaret Ranelle Archibald married Eric Paul Hebert, one of the first doctors in Palm Beach.

Summary:     This collection primarily consists of photographs documenting members of the Archibald, Kendrick, and Maheu families as well as numerous extended family members and friends. The photos include portraits and group photos, and many depict people participating in various activities such as farming, enjoying the beach, swimming, horseback riding, and more. The collection also includes scenic photographs depicting Florida landscapes and structures, and images of dredging and railroad construction in Florida and Missouri. The bulk of the photographs are unidentified. The collection contains a small amount of papers, which includes postcard correspondence, report cards, newspaper clippings, and various other memorabilia.
