The Florida Legislature established the Department of Agriculture in 1889 (Chapter 3857, Laws of Florida) and reformed in 1959 (Ch. 59-54, Laws). The Department performed most of the state's agricultural regulating and inspecting; made recommendations to the Governor and the Legislature on the needs of agriculture in the state; set license and inspection fees; administered the dairy, plant, and animal industries of the state; inspected fertilizers, feeds, seeds, petroleum products, and pesticides; and collected and distributed information on agriculture.
In 1969, the legislature created the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services from a merger of several entities. This included the existing Department, the Florida Consumers' Council, the Office of Consumer Services, the Florida Board of Forestry, the State Soil and Water Conservation Board, the Board of Commissioners of the Everglades Fire Control District, and various technical and advisory councils and committees (Ch. 69-106, Laws).
Summary:
This series contains an unbound volume of photographic prints that the Florida Department of Agriculture's Bureau of Publicity created and maintained for public distribution. The photographs depict various aspects of Florida with a focus on agriculture and industry. The photos are grouped according to subject: agricultural scenes, scenic views, sports and recreation, and industry views.
The agricultural scenes depict farm workers in fields and orchards planting, managing, harvesting, and packing produce. The scenic views are of some of Florida's landmark springs, rivers, gardens, and harbors. The sport and recreation photos include images of beachgoers and people fishing, boating, horseracing, golfing, and more. Industry views include historical structures and Seminole villages, as well as images of stills, mills, industrial plants, and various machinery relating to the logging, turpentine, paper, cement, phosphate, and sugar industries.
