Biographical/Historical:     Dorothy Watson Glisson (1912-2001) was Florida's 17th Secretary of State and the first woman to be a member of the Florida Cabinet.

Glisson graduated from Leon High School in 1930 and married William Ernest Glisson in 1945. In 1951, she began her long career with the Florida Department of State in the elections office. She was Director of the Division of Elections from 1954 until July 1974, when Governor Reubin Askew appointed her to complete the term of Secretary of State Richard Stone, who had resigned to campaign for United States Senator. She completed the last six months of Stone's term and, with the installation of her successor Bruce Smathers in January 1975, returned to the Division of Elections.

In January 1976, Governor Askew appointed Glisson as secretary of the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation. In 1978, she returned to the Department of State, serving as Assistant Secretary under Jesse McCrary, as Deputy Secretary of State under George Firestone, and finally as Deputy Secretary for Elections from November 1979 until her retirement in February 1987.

Summary:     This collection contains records documenting Dorothy W. Glisson's career with the Florida Department of State as the head of the Division of Elections and as Secretary of State. The records include papers, news clippings, and photographic prints and slides. The papers document Glisson's position as Director of the Division of Elections, her installation as Secretary of State, and her retirement from the department. The news clippings primarily document the first month of her term as Secretary of State, although there are also some articles discussing her career in 1961 and her death in 2001. The photographs and slides depict Glisson and her husband, their homes in Tallahassee, their pets, and their family and friends, as well as her 1930 graduation photo.
