Biographical/Historical:     In 1924, Herbert Niedhauk (1879-1969) and his wife Sara Niedhauk (1880-1946) moved with their three adult children (Russell, Kathryn, and Evelyn) from Reading, Pennsylvania to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Although their intent was to winter in Florida before moving west, the family settled in Fort Lauderdale and built a house on 16th Avenue that is still standing. After Sara's death in 1946, Herbert became an avid amateur musician and was active in the church choir at Park Temple United Methodist Church until his death in 1969. The three Niedhauk children remained in South Florida and began their own families.

Russell Niedhauk (1902-1994) married Charlotte Arpin in 1934. They lived and worked as caretakers on Lignumvitae Key, a small island in the upper Florida Keys, from the 1950s until 1974. Evelyn Niedhauk (1905-1993) married Frank S. White, Jr. in 1929.
Kathryn Niedhauk (1904-1993) married John Hood in 1924. The Hood family was heading south from Georgia at the same time the Niedhauks were traveling to Florida, and the two families became close.

Kathryn and John lived on a farm north of Fort Lauderdale, and they had two children: Kathryn Ann "Snooky" Hood (1925-2020) and June Margaret Hood (1927-1987). June Hood married Jack Cheaney, then later married Dick Barnes. In the 1940s, June Hood took flying lessons and became an accomplished acrobatic aviator.

Summary:     This collection contains records documenting several generations of the Niedhauk and Hood families from their journey to Florida in 1924 through the 1980s. The Niedhauk and Hood families lived varied lives throughout South Florida and documented their experiences through photographs, correspondence, news clippings, and other paper records. Of note are the extensive annotations and identifying information provided by the donor, a direct descendent of the Niedhauk and Hood families.
