Biographical/Historical:     Formed out of a merger between the American Agricultural Chemical Company and the International Minerals and Chemical Company, the IMC-Agrico Phosphate Company was one of the largest companies in central Florida producing phosphate by the mid-20th century. Given the faraway location of these mines from populated areas and the still developing transportation network between them, IMC-Agrico established a number of company towns in modern day Polk County and Hillsborough County.  At the start of the 20th century, Florida produced some 80% of all phosphate in the United States and about 20% worldwide. That said, there was notable pushback to their success in the second half of the 20th century from environmental groups, which often photographed and published scathing reports of the phosphate industry's deep contributions to pollution and spreading hazardous waste through the state.

Summary:     The collection features a number of photographic negatives that range in dates from the early 1900s all the way up the 1960s. Photos depict the industrial structures and machinery that make the phosphate industry possible as well as images from the company town of Pierce.
