Biographical/Historical:     The 1947 Fort Lauderdale hurricane was a major hurricane that struck South Florida on September 17, with the eye of the storm passing over Fort Lauderdale. The storm caused widespread flooding, damage to vegetation, beach erosion, and 17 people died. However, structural damage was relatively minor due to more stringent construction standards since the 1920s and improved dikes in Lake Okeechobee prevented a repeat of the deadly flooding that occurred after hurricanes in 1926 and 1928. In the state, the storm caused nearly $32 million in damages, most of them property- and crop-related.

Fred E. Cullum and his wife Anne Cullum were living in Fort Lauderdale when the 1947 hurricane passed through on September 17.

Summary:     This single-item collection consists of Fred E. Cullum's account of the 1947 Fort Lauderdale hurricane that struck South Florida on September 17. He and his wife, Anne, remained in their home during the hurricane, and he recounts their preparations prior to and experiences during the storm. He provides such details as wind speeds, times, and damage to and around their home.
