Biographical/Historical:     Michael R. Pender (1926-2014) was the Deputy Executive Vice President for the New York World's Fair Corporation, and was responsible for overseeing the various state exhibits. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Pender earned his Master's in Engineering from Dartmouth in 1950. He began his career as a project manager for Madigan-Highland Engineers in New York before joining the administrative staff of the New York World's Fair Corporation. After organizing several other influential projects in New York, Pender moved to Sarasota, Florida in 1986, where he continued to work as a senior consulting engineer with Boyle Engineering until 2006.

The 1964-1965 New York World's Fair took place during two six-month seasons from April 1964 to October 1965 in the borough of Queens, New York City. Florida's contribution to the fair was a showcase of all that "Fabulous Florida" had to offer. Fairgoers could visit Florida's large pavilions to view an exhibition of the activities of many large Florida companies, sample the state's famous citrus, or watch alligator wrestling with the Seminoles, a porpoise show, or a water skiing spectacle. Presiding over the area was the "Citrus Tower," topped by an illuminated 15-foot orange.

Summary:     This collection consists of papers and photographs that Michael Pender collected and maintained during his role as a member of the administrative staff for the 1964-1965 New York World's Fair. The records primarily document the planning, development, and operation of the Florida Pavilion and its various attractions. The records include correspondence and memoranda between the New York World's Fair Corporation and the Florida World's Fair Authority, press releases documenting the planning processes and describing the various attractions, news clippings, architectural reports and logistical plans, event programs, and other related materials. The photographs depict the Florida Pavilion during construction and after completion, the water ski and porpoise shows, and executive members of New York World's Fair Corporation and the Florida World's Fair Authority.
