Biographical/Historical:     Oliver Wendell Holmes (1902-1981), born in St. Paul, Minnesota, was an archivist and historian who contributed to the archival profession in America. Beginning in 1935, he worked at the National Archives, serving as chief of the Interior Department archives (1938-1941), director of research and records description (1942-1945), program advisor (1945-1948), chief of the Natural Resources Records Branch (1948-1961), and executive director of the National Historical Publications Commission (1961-1972). In 1936, he was a founding member of the Society of American Archivists (SAA). He served as Fellow of the Society of American Archivists from 1948 to 1951 and the President of the SAA from 1958 to 1959. His publications were milestones in archival theory and history literature. Examples of his articles published in the American Archivist include "The Evaluation and Preservation of Business Archives" (October 1938); "The National Archives and the Protection of Records in War Areas" (April 1946); "The National Archives at a Turn in the Road" (October 1949); "Archival Arrangement-Five Different Operations at Five Different Levels" (January 1964); and "Toward an International Archives Program and Council, 1945-1950" (July 1976).

Timothy Few (1959- ) received his bachelor's degree in history from Florida Southern College in Lakeland, Florida. Few began working at the State Archives of Florida as a volunteer in September 1982 and interned at the State Archives from May to August 1983. He was hired as Archives Assistant in August 1983, quickly earning promotions to Archivist I and Archivist II. After three years in archival roles, he moved to the Records Management Program at the Florida Department of State. Except for a brief period of employment at the Utah State Archives, Few worked in this role until his retirement in 2021.

Tim Few's aunt, Vivian Toole, was a good friend of Oliver W. Holmes and his wife. In 1978, while visiting his aunt, Few met Holmes. Holmes signed his article, "Archival Arrangement-Five Different Operations at Five Different Levels," to encourage Few's interest in history and desire to work in archives.

Summary:     This collection consists of a signed copy of Oliver W. Holmes' article, "Archival Arrangement-Five Different Operations for Five Different Levels." The author included a note to the recipient, Tim Few, "For Timothy Few with best wishes." The copy was reprinted from the American Archivist Vol. 27, No. 1 (January, 1964).
