Biographical/Historical:     Nettie Clare Bowen, a Tallahassee native, graduated from Florida State College in 1905. She was a teacher in Tallahassee for many years. After the death of her brother, Edgar, in 1923, Clare moved to DeLand to manage his business, G. W. Fisher Drug Co., for six years before selling it and returning to Tallahassee.  She was involved in many philanthropic and community organizations, such as the International Order of the King's Daughters and Sons, the Cherokee Garden Circle, and the Ladies Pharmaceutical Auxiliary. Bowen led efforts to preserve a number of oak trees in the Calhoun Street District, her family's neighborhood, in 1945, with partial success. Bowen died in 1973.

Summary:     This collection contains the personal papers of Nettie Clare Bowen. Included are two scrapbooks of newspaper clippings, photographs, poetry and letters, as well as a number of loose records of the same description. One scrapbook is dated 1901. The other scrapbook contains newspaper clippings from 1901 to 1970, the bulk of which cover the 1910s and 1930s. The loose documents range from 1889 to 1976, three years after the death of Clare, suggesting that the 1974 to 1976 articles were added posthumously.
