Biographical/Historical:     When France, Spain, and Britain signed the Treaty of Paris in 1763, Spain ceded Florida to Britain, which then divided the land into East and West Florida. East Florida consisted of everything east of the Apalachicola River; West Florida was the land between the Apalachicola and Mississippi Rivers. To draw settlers, the London Board of Trade granted land to anyone willing to settle in Florida. East and West Florida remained British colonies until 1783 when Britain and Spain signed the Treaty of Versailles (part of the Peace of Paris), and Britain ceded the entire Florida territory to Spain.

Summary:     This single-item collection contains a land grant conveying twenty-nine acres of land along the St. Johns River to Thomas Dunnage, a merchant, dated April 29, 1771. Attached to this record are a plat map and certification letter by the surveyor, drawn April 22, 1771. The land grant is signed by David Yeats, Deputy Clerk of Court for East Florida.
