Biographical/Historical: Madison County was created by an act of the State Legislature on December 26, 1827. It was formed from the eastern part of Jefferson County. In 1856, the southern half was divided to create Taylor and Layfayette counties (Chap. 806, Laws). The Clerk of the Circuit Court in each county serves as the official custodian of deed, marriage, and probate records.

Summary: These records of Madison County, ranging from the late 1800s up into the early 1950s, largely concern the letters patents of companies, small businesses, and large corporations that have filed with the State of Florida to operate in the corporate limits of the county. With each charter, one can see the development of Madison County first hand, with Greenville and Cherry Lake as notable examples. Earlier records in Box 1 feature a few select businesses that undergo name changes due to a new partnership or owner entering the picture. Box 2 features a few official dissolutions as well, with corporations established in previous file folders in the late 1800s and early 1900s going out of business in the mid-20th century.
