The Online Catalog allows searching and browsing of information about the Florida State Archives’ holdings of over 48,000 cubic feet of state and local government records and historical manuscripts. The catalog provides descriptions of over 3,400 collections and lists the contents of containers and folders in many of those collections. Biographical/Historical:     The State Library of Florida began in 1845 when the Florida Territorial Legislature charged the Secretary of State with collecting, maintaining, and making accessible all the books and maps owned by the State (Chapter 13, Laws of Florida). In 1925, the legislature created the three-member State Library Board to administer the State Library and authorized it to appoint a Secretary to act as State Librarian (Ch. 10278, Laws). Predating the State Archives, the State Library pursued the collection of many historical documents and manuscripts related to Florida until the formal creation of the State Archives in 1969.

Summary:     This series contains materials originally held by the State Library of Florida. The records document a variety of people and places in Florida and include legal and financial records documenting the transfer of property in Leon County, commissions for Justices of the Peace in Gadsden County, a letter to Governor Bloxham regarding the appointment of Auctioneer of Escambia County, a joint resolution to Congress regarding the "Direct-Tax" law of 1861, and other assorted materials.
