Biographical/Historical:     Monroe Eugene Fletcher was born in Havana, Florida, on December 30, 1917, to William Foster Fletcher and Anna Goodwin Beggs. Monroe was one of six children, with two brothers and three sisters. Monroe's father was a graduate of Florida Southern College, and his mother graduated from Florida Female College, later Florida State University. Monroe's father was a farmer and sharecropper. The Fletcher family moved from Havana to Quincy, Florida, in the early 1920s, and then to Tallahassee in 1929. Monroe graduated Leon High School and served during World War II in the 30th Air Service Squadron for the Army Air Forces. After the war, Monroe attended Georgia Tech. He later worked as a bridge engineer for the Florida Department of Transportation. He married Laverne Cash Fletcher in 1946. They had three children: Nancy, Peggy, and Stuart. Monroe retired in 1982 and lived in Tallahassee until his death on December 7, 2014.

Summary:     This collection contains the deed history for the home of Monroe Eugene Fletcher and his wife, Laverne Cash Fletcher, along with his unpublished autobiography. The autobiography, titled "Accentuate the Ordinary: My Twentieth Century Journey," details Monroe's life from his birth in 1917 up to around 1931 or 1932, when he was fifteen. Most of the autobiography focuses on Monroe's life as a middle-class farmer's son in North Florida in the 1920s. The work discusses farming, childhood experiences, injuries, schooling, financial setbacks, and other routine aspects of everyday life. Throughout the manuscript, Monroe reflects upon what it was like to be a child in the 1920s, often comparing it to what he believes childhood was like in the 1990s. The autobiography also touches on larger events, such as the land boom in Florida in the 1920s and the subsequent fall in the late 1920s.
