Biographical/Historical:     Comer J. Kimball (1903-1966) was born in Atlanta, Georgia. He graduated in three years from the University of Virginia and then began his banking career in New York City before coming to Florida in 1940 as executive officer of the First National Bank in Palm Beach. He negotiated and oversaw multiple bank mergers and became executive vice president of the First National Bank of Miami in 1947, then chairman of the board in 1951. He was also active in numerous civic and charitable efforts in Dade County. In the early 1960s, Florida Governor Ferris Bryant appointed Kimball as chairman and president of the Florida World's Fair Authority, the organization responsible for designing, constructing, financing, and operating the state's pavilion at the upcoming New York World's Fair.

The 1964-1965 New York World's Fair took place during two six-month seasons from April 1964 to October 1965 in the borough of Queens, New York City. Florida's contribution to the fair was a showcase of all that "Fabulous Florida" had to offer. Fairgoers could visit Florida's large pavilions to view an exhibition of the activities of many large Florida companies, sample the state's famous citrus, or watch alligator wrestling with the Seminoles, a porpoise show, or a water skiing spectacle. Presiding over the area was the "Citrus Tower," topped by an illuminated 15-foot orange.

Summary:     This collection contains photographs and other records documenting Florida's pavilion at the 1964-1965 New York World's Fair. Originally maintained as a scrapbook, the records include Comer J. Kimball's speech at the opening of the exhibit, a list of members of Florida World's Fair Authority, a brochure promoting the exhibit and its unique features, and black-and-white photographs depicting visitors enjoying various aspects of the exhibit.
