Biographical/Historical:     E. Swift and Company, run by Massachusetts family members Elijah, Rodolphus and Oliver Swift, was one of the leading lumber operations in 19th century Florida. The company specialized in cutting timber from live oak trees along the eastern Florida coast and supplying it to the U.S. Navy for ships. Workers involved in the harvesting operations established lumber camps, such as Camp Live Oak on the Halifax River and Camp Heriot on Heriot Plantation.

Summary:     This collection contains a handwritten ledger that documents the live oak lumber cut on lands belonging the estate of Benjamin Chaires and the Heriot Plantation, situated on the Halifax River in what is now Volusia County. The ledger provides the stick number (1 through 2224), length, breadth, depth, contents, carve, and remarks. It includes weekly totals from the week ending November 22, 1858 to week ending April 12, 1859. On the last two pages, Paul Shiverick, possibly an administrator for the E. Swift and Company, signed to certify the amount of timber cut from the locations.
