Biographical/Historical:     Hinson is an unincorporated community in Gadsden County, Florida, located just north of Havana. It is named for the Hinson family, early pioneers of North Florida. Daniel Murphy (D.M.) Hinson was born in 1795 in North Carolina. By the 1830s, he had settled in Gadsden County and established a large labor farm for shade tobacco, cotton, and sugar cane. He married Ann Nicholson. One of their children was also named Daniel Murphy, who eventually married Melia Maxwell and had a son named Daniel Pierce. The Hinson family built a two-story farm house and a church and ran a general store.

In 1838, Florida's territorial governor Richard K. Call appointed D.M. Hinson, Sr. Justice of the Peace in Gadsden County. Successive governors maintained this appointment until 1849 when Governor Thomas Brown appointed Hinson county commissioner. He remained county commissioner until he died in 1887.
