Biographical/Historical:     Rick Scott was elected Florida's 45th Governor in November 2010, running on a platform of increasing private-sector employment and reducing the size and cost of government. Scott was re-elected to a second term in November 2014.

Rick Scott was born on December 1, 1952 in Bloomington, Illinois and raised in Kansas City, Missouri. Scott enlisted in the Navy after high school and a year of community college. After completing over two years of Navy service, Scott earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, then a law degree from Southern Methodist University.

Scott practiced corporate law in Dallas, specializing in health care mergers and acquisitions. In 1987, he established Columbia Hospital Corporation. He later acquired Hospital Corporation of America and merged the businesses in 1989 to form Columbia/HCA. After leaving Columbia/HCA in 1997, Scott settled in Florida and bought and sold several healthcare companies.

The Office of Citizen Services, within the Executive Office of the Governor, coordinates responses to incoming correspondence for the governor. The correspondence unit routes letters to the appropriate unit within the governor's office or other state agency for response.

Summary:     This series consists of a sampling of incoming mail to the Governor's Office expressing opinions or asking for assistance on the full variety of issues of concern to the public. Topics covered include issues of ongoing concern such as state education policy, healthcare, environmental protection, law enforcement, etc., as well as major events and controversies such as the influx of Syrian refugees, Florida's alimony bill (SB 668), climate change, transgender bathrooms, and the defunding of Planned Parenthood. Many of the letters ask for assistance with personal or local matters.

The series includes letters and postcards of public opinion regarding other debated topics: lethal Injection and the death penalty; candidates of the 2016 Presidential Election; the legalization of medical marijuana; hurricane relief and emergency management after Hurricane Matthew and Hurricane Irma; the lease revocation of Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge; gun control, gun violence, and mass shootings; animal welfare, particularly greyhound racing; the Zika virus outbreak; the protection of LGBTQ+ youths in foster care; and the opioid crisis.
