Biographical/Historical:     The Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission was established July 1, 1999 in Article IV, Section 9, Florida Constitution, as the result of a constitutional amendment passed in the November 1998 elections. The new Commission merged the Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission and the Marine Fisheries Commission into one body with responsibility for conserving the state's fresh and saltwater aquatic and wild animal life. Several marine-related programs administered by the Department of Environmental Protection, such as the Florida Marine Patrol, the Florida Marine Research Institute and manatee and sea turtle programs, also merged into the Commission.

In 1935 the Florida Legislature created the Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission to supersede the Department of Game and Fresh Water Fish (Ch. 17016, Laws of Florida). The post of State Game and Fish Commissioner originated in 1913 within the Department of Game and Fish (Ch. 6535, Laws). In 1969 the Commission moved under nominal control of the Department of Natural Resources (Ch. 69-106, Laws). In 1977 the legislature reconstituted the Commission as an independent entity (Ch. 77-204, Laws). The Commission's mission is to manage aquatic and wild animal life and their habitats and to preserve a diversity of species distributions that provide sustained ecological, recreational, scientific, educational, cultural, and economic benefits.
