Biographical/Historical:     The Bradford and Eppes family was a Tallahassee-area family descending from Francis Wayles Eppes (1801-1881), the grandson of President Thomas Jefferson. Francis Eppes moved to Tallahassee after his grandfather's death. He owned a labor farm with a large number of enslaved Black laborers and served several terms as Tallahassee's mayor. He married twice in his lifetime and had 13 children.

One of his children, Nicholas Ware Eppes (1843-1904), married Susan Branch Bradford (1848-1942) on November 1, 1866. They had seven children: Edward Bradford, Susan "Susie" Ware, Francis, Martha Branch, Elizabeth Cleland, Amos W., and Alice Bradford. Nicolas Ware Eppes was Leon County's Commissioner of Public Instruction. He was murdered on September 3, 1904. Susan Branch Bradford Eppes was known for her historical writings and participation in civil affairs. The Bradford and Eppes family maintained residences on two Leon County labor farms, Pine Hill - acquired through Nicholas' marriage to Susan - and Horseshoe.
