Biographical/Historical:     Stephen C. Foster, "America's Troubadour," was born in Lawrenceville, Pennsylvania, on July 4, 1826. Foster is remembered for composing songs that captured the spirit of the United States in the 19th century. He wrote over 200 songs in his career. Some of his most popular include: "Oh! Susanna," "Laura Lee," "My Old Kentucky Home," "Old Folks at Home (aka "Swanee River"), "Camptown Races," "Beautiful Dreamer," " Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair," and "Old Black Joe." White Springs, Florida, is home to the Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park. The park, on the banks of the Suwanee River, opened in 1950 to honor Foster and his song, "Old Folks at Home." Every year since 1954 the park has hosted the annual Florida Folk Festival.

Foster Lynn Barnes was born in May of 1903. In 1941, he began surveying and designing the grounds for the Stephen Foster Memorial (now named the Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park) in White Springs, Florida. He later served as director of the Stephen Foster Memorial from 1950 to 1965, during which time he arranged for the selection and design of the museum's dioramas depicting Stephen Foster's most famous songs. From 1954 until his retirement in 1965, Barnes recorded performances at the Florida Folk Festival. He passed away in West Palm Beach in 1972.

Summary:     This collection contains audio recordings of folk songs performed by various folk artists, including Mark Moore, Jim Rogers, Walter "Dee Dee" Barnes and Mitch Miller, as well as other auditory tributes to the works and successes of Stephen C. Foster.  This collection also includes recordings of family members talking, primarily an adult male (possibly Foster Lynn Barnes or his brother Walter Dee Barnes) talking with his young children.
