Biographical/Historical:     The Bowen, Dixon, and Sweeting families lived in the North Florida and Panhandle areas and are connected through marriage.

James Edward Bowen (1860-1899) and his wife Sarah Amelia Bell (1859-1931) lived in Concord, Gadsden County. Together they had eight children, one of whom was Amelia Bowen (1889-1981). In 1906, Amelia married William Arthur Peavy; their eldest daughter was Madie Leo Peavy (1909-2004).

Thomas Coleman Dixon (1854-1930) and his wife Sarah Jane Johnson (1859-1940) lived in Madison County, arriving from Georgia in the 1860s or early 1870s. Together they had ten children, one of whom was Warren Coleman Dixon (1879-1931). Warren worked at a phosphate mine in Mulberry, Florida.

Henry Newton Sweeting (1854-1924) and his wife Alice Isabella Bourchier (1863-1916) immigrated with their family from England to Florida in the early 1900s. Henry's brother William Welch had already left England to settle in Florida. Both branches of the Sweeting family lived in Bagdad (Santa Rosa County) before moving to Tallahassee. Henry and Alice Sweeting had a daughter, Cassandra Alice Sweeting (1883-1948), who married Warren Coleman Dixon in 1910. They had two children: Coleman Sweeting (1911-1979) and Henry David (b. 1916). Coleman Sweeting Dixon married Madie Leo Peavy in 1933. Their daughter, Cassandra "Sandra" Dixon, is the creator of this collection.

Summary:     This collection contains photographs and some genealogical material compiled by Sandra Dixon of Tallahassee, Florida. The images are primarily portraits of members of the Bowen, Dixon, and Sweeting families, but there are also many images of dwellings and locations in which the families lived and visited. The photographic materials include re-prints, albumen prints, photographic postcards, and negatives. The papers are primarily genealogical materials documenting the numerous family members and relationships between the families. This material is interfiled with the photgraphs for ease of reference.
