Biographical/Historical:     Lionel J. Crawford (1917-2005) was a commercial photographer in New York City. At the age of 17, he worked as a photo technician at a photographic processing lab. In 1937, the lab manager, Tony Venti, opened his own photographic studio and asked Crawford to join him as a full-time photographer.

In 1940, Crawford joined the United States Navy as a petty officer first class and quickly advanced to chief petty officer. He became an official photographer for many formal U.S. Navy functions before transferring from New York to the Patuxent River Naval Air Testing Station in Maryland to help create Naval Air Corps cameras and develop photographic techniques for aerial reconnaissance. In early 1942, Crawford and several other photographic technicians were sent to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to set up a photo lab for processing naval aircraft film.

In 1944, Crawford returned to Patuxent River NAS before his honorable discharge in 1945. He went back to work at the Venti Photography Studio until 1947 when the McGraw Hill Publishing Company hired him as a staff photographer, and he remained with the company until his retirement in 1982. During his time with McGraw Hill, Crawford became one of the leading commercial photographers in New York City, taking photographs for the company's corporate events and its publications. He also photographed his family's holidays and vacations in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, in the 1950s and 1960s.

Summary:     The collection consists of images of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, in the mid-20th century taken by commercial photographer Lionel J. Crawford. Crawford took the photos while stationed there in the early years of World War II, and later during family vacations. The collection includes images of the Crawford family and scenic views of the city.
