Biographical/Historical:     On October 2, 1857, the Board of County Commissioners of Taylor County purchased forty acres of land from the State of Florida for a courthouse and townsite, but very little development took place until 1870 due to the disruption of the Civil War. On April 2, 1870, the commission directed James H. Wentworth to re-survey the townsite into quarter-acre lots.

James Hamilton Wentworth (1836-1893) was born in Screven County, Georgia, and later settled in Taylor County, Florida. In 1862 he enlisted in Company D of the Fifth Florida Infantry. Union forces captured him at the Battle of Gettysburg, and he remained in Union prisons until his release at the end of the war. During his time in Taylor County, Wentworth served as a schoolteacher, attorney and county judge. He later moved to Pensacola, where he died in 1893.

Summary:     The collection consists of a digital copy of a map of Perry, Florida, hand-drawn in 1870 by James H. Wentworth as directed by the Taylor County Board of County Commissioners. The map provides dimensions of town lots, the numbers of lots and blocks, street names and the location of the courthouse. Most of the town lots are marked with their owners' names. The original map is in the holdings of the Taylor County Historical Society.
