Biographical/Historical:     The Division of Historical Resources is part of the Florida Department of State's Office of Cultural, Historical and Information Programs (OCHIP) in the Office of the Secretary of State. The Florida Legislature created the Division in 1986, giving it some of the functions of the Division of Archives, History and Records Management (Chapter 86-183, Laws of Florida). The Division is mandated to preserve historical, cultural and archaeological resources of Florida. The Division includes the Bureau of Historic Preservation, the Bureau of Archaeological Research and the Director's Office.

    In 1971, the Florida Legislature directed the Division of Archives, History and Records Management to recommend names for state buildings and facilities in conjunction with a citizen committee, aptly called the Advisory Committee on Naming Buildings (Ch. 71-267, Laws). Secretary of State Richard Stone invited several historians throughout the state to serve on the committee and appointed Samuel Proctor, a noted historian at the University of Florida, as chairman. The committee reviewed requests from state agencies and universities to name buildings, bridges, roads, parks and recreation areas in honor of individuals who had made significant contributions to the state or institution.

Summary:     This series contains Samuel Proctor's correspondence and memoranda from his time as chairman of the Advisory Committee on Naming Buildings. It includes letters from committee members regarding suggested names, biographical information for the individuals whose names the committee considered and lists of committee members.
