Biographical/Historical:     The Florida Legislature created the Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission in 1935 (Chapter 17016, Laws of Florida) to supersede the Department of Game and Fresh Water Fish (1927, Ch. 11838, Laws). The post of State Game and Fish Commissioner was originally created in 1913 (Ch. 6535, Laws) in the Department of Game and Fish. In 1969, the Commission was placed under the nominal control of the Department of Natural Resources (Ch. 69-106, Laws). In 1977, the Commission was reconstituted as an independent entity (Ch. 77-204, Laws).

A constitutional amendment passed in November 1998 created the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), formally established July 1, 1999 (Article IV, Section 9, Florida Constitution). The new Commission merged the Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission and the Marine Fisheries Commission into one body responsible for conserving the state's fresh and saltwater aquatic life and wild animal life. Several of the marine-related programs administered by the Department of Environmental Protection, such as the Florida Marine Patrol, the Florida Marine Research Institute, and manatee and sea turtle programs, also merged into the commission. The mission of FWC is to manage aquatic and wild animal life and their habitats, and to preserve a diversity of species distributions that provide sustained ecological, recreational, scientific, educational, cultural, and economic benefits.

The Community Relations (CR) Office within the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission coordinates the public-communication efforts of the commission's various divisions and offices. These efforts include issuing news releases on agency programs and activities and serving as media spokespersons. The office coordinates activities to educate Floridians and visitors of the role and value of Florida's fish and wildlife resources and to foster a sense stewardship for these resources.

Summary:     This series consists of records created and maintained by the Community Relations Office within the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, as well as records from its predecessor the Office of Informational Services.

Subseries 1 consists of files that document the various projects, publications, and research that the Office of Informational Services and the Community Relations Office created and maintained in the course of fulfilling their roles as ambassadors of the agency. The paper records include research and progress reports, public service announcement scripts, commission meeting materials, correspondence, publications about Florida wildlife, and more.

Subseries 2 consists of original art and prints created for the Florida Wildlife Scrapbook, an informational page featured in every issue of the monthly Florida Wildlife magazine beginning in 1955. The scrapbook usually included sketches of wildlife with facts and features, or informational comics about recreation and conservation. This subseries comprises various mediums, including watercolor paintings, pencil sketches, and more.

Subseries 3 contains presentation materials compiled by the Office of Information Services, including scripts and audio cassettes in most cases, to present to outside agencies and the public to educate and advocate for the agency and its operations.

Subseries 4 consists of photographic material (prints, slides, and negatives) documenting various aspects and activities of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission. Photos are arranged by topic: Agency, Environment, Fish/Fishing/Fish Management, Recreation, and Wildlife/Wildlife Management/Hunting. "Agency" contains images of personnel, including administrators and wildlife officers, and FWC-directed activities such as youth camps and various conferences and meetings. "Environment" consists of scenic images depicting Florida's varied environment, including forests, coasts, rivers, lakes, and ponds. There are also images of structures such as bridges and dams, as well as roads and cityscapes. "Fish/Fishing/Fish Management" contains images of Florida's fresh and saltwater fish; fishing; and fish management and water management activities such as tagging, hatcheries, and water weed control. "Recreation" contains images depicting people enjoying recreational activities such as boating, hiking, swimming, and camping. "Wildlife/Wildlife Management/Hunting" contains images depicting hunters and the hunting of various native and non-native animals; images of Florida's varied native and non-native wildlife and plant species, including birds, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals, as well as trees and flowers; and wildlife management activities such as trapping and releasing, tagging, and telemetry.

Subseries 5 contains audio and video material (electronic and magnetic media including disks, tapes, and reels) documenting various agency outreach activities and promotional material unless otherwise noted. These include thematic television and radio spots and public service announcements; wildlife and wildlife management footage; educational programs and shorts; meetings, workshops, and presentations; law enforcement officer and police dog training; and more.
