Biographical/Historical:     Frank Bagge (b. 1889) was a civil engineer in Miami, Florida. He supervised construction of the Everglades Hotel in Downtown Miami, which was completed just before the "Great Miami Hurricane" of 1926.

Between 18 and 21 September 1926, a category four hurricane struck South Florida. With sustained winds of over a 100 mph -- the first recording of such an occurrence -- the storm caused millions of dollars in damage, ruining South Florida's crops as well as its real estate and tourism business, and killed over 400 residents. Most residents died as the eye passed through; ignorant that the storm was not yet finished, many ventured to assess the damage and were trapped without shelter. Over 55,000 Floridians were without electricity and another 40,000 were rendered homeless. At a time before named hurricanes, the 1926 hurricane was known as the "Great Miami Hurricane."

Summary:     This collection consists of photographs and newspaper clippings documenting destruction following the "Great Miami Hurricane" in September 1926. The black-and-white images depict structural damage and property loss throughout Miami. Frank Bagge took the photos while in his role as a civil engineer in Miami.
