	Biographical/Historical:	The Department of Children and Families was created by Section 20.19, Florida Statutes. The department's secretary is appointed by the Governor. The agency is responsible for the safety, well-being, and welfare of abused, neglected, and abandoned children, the elderly, people with disabilites, and those suffering from mental illness and/or substance abuse problems. It also maintains partnerships with local communities in assisting people to become economically self-sufficient, thereby creating stable families and communities. The department has the overall responsibility of all family services offered by the state.
	Summary:	This series documents the activities of the Department of Children and Families. The complete set of monthly reading files from 1991-2004 reflect the varied issues attended to by the Secretary's Office.
