Biographical/Historical:     The Union Bank of Florida was established in the 1830s by a group of labor farmers. One of these men, John G. Gamble, became the largest stockholder. The bank was incorporated under the first Territorial Governor of Florida, William Pope Duval, who wanted to organize a farmer's bank in the territory. The bank offered landowners the option to secure stock through mortgages of their land, enslaved persons, houses, etc.

Florida faced economic difficulties in the late 1830s as the state faced droughts and the Panic of 1837, a financial crisis tied to land speculation and price drops. The bank struggled to secure payments on defaulted loans as labor farmers and other settlers left the state. The Gamble family mortgaged most of their property to try and secure the bank's capital, but the collapsing economy led to legislation suspending the Union Bank's activities in 1843. The bank was unable to meet the conditions to raise their suspension, and this act of legislature led to the bank's closure.

Summary:     This collection consists of materials related to John Grattan Gamble's involvement with the Union Bank of Florida. Included is John G. Gamble's Last Will and Testament and Codicil to his will, written in 1844 after the Union Bank of Florida's activities were suspended by the state. The collection also contains records from the Union Bank of Florida including letters regarding outstanding debts and settlements after the suspension of the bank by the state, promissory notes, and mortgages.
