Biographical/Historical:     The American Legion is the largest United States veterans' organization. It was chartered by Congress in 1919, in support of World War I veterans. The first American Legion caucus convened in Paris in March 1919, followed by a caucus in May 1919 in St. Louis, Missouri. In this second caucus, "The American Legion" name was officially adopted as well as the organization's preamble and constitution.

Summary:     This collection includes telegrams from Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., serving as the American Legion's temporary chairman, to Brigader General Albert Hazen Blanding in Bartow, Florida. In the telegrams, Roosevelt provides details of the caucus that occured in Paris, gives details about the American Legion's intended purpose and asks Blanding to attend the caucus in St. Louis, Missouri, to represent Florida. Also included is a telegram from Blanding to Roosevelt on April 5, 1919, accepting the offer to serve on the temporary committee and represent Florida for the American Legion in St. Louis.
