Biographical/Historical:     David G. Raney (1799-1881)  was born in Brunswick County, Virginia, and moved to Jackson County, Florida, in the 1820s while working as a land speculator. In 1833, he married Harriet Frances Jordan, the widow of his employer, and the couple moved to Apalachicola. He established a partnership with George Washington Harrison and opened a dry goods store. This business was moved a few times, ultimately relocating to a brick building at 43 Water Street, one of very few buildings still standing in this district today; nearly all buildings in Apalachicola's business district were destroyed in a fire in 1900. Along with his merchant career, David Raney was also an enslaver, recording 8 enslaved persons in 1840, 6 in 1850, and 9 in 1860.

Raney served in several public roles in Florida. In 1829, he was appointed Postmaster of the Aobalaga post office in Jackson County. In Apalachicola, he was elected mayor in 1843 and 1844, served on the board of directors for the local branch of the Bank of Pensacola, elected president of the Chamber of Commerce, and helped found the Apalachicola Library Association, among other roles.

Summary:     This collection includes records which detail David G. Raney's taxable property by an ordinance of the city of Apalachicola. Among other things,  these records list 12 enslaved Black people: Homer, Antoinette, 9 unnamed women, and 1 unnamed man.
