Biographical/Historical:     Major George Rainsford Fairbanks (1820-1906) was the son of Jason and Mary Fairbanks of Watertown, New York. He moved to the Territory of Florida when he was 22 years old. He originally moved to St. Augustine, later settling in Fernandina. His residence, the Fairbanks House in Fernandina, is registered with the National Register of Historic Places. He served as the clerk of the United States Circuit Court in Florida and as a State Senator from 1846 to 1848. He was a historian, publishing several academic books on the history of early Florida and giving lectures on the topic.

    During the Civil War, Major Fairbanks worked closely with the Commissary Department of the Army of Tennessee. He also served as a representative of Florida on the Board for the University of the South from 1857 until his death in 1906. He was greatly involved with the University of the South, and he was buried in the University of the South Cemetery in Sewanee, Tennessee.

Summary:     This collection includes a letter from George R. Fairbanks to G. W. Wilson, Esquire on March 6, 1906. The letter discusses Fairbanks' memories of when the Seal of the State of Florida was designed.
