Biographical/Historical:     Amon DeLaughter (1834-1906) was a Madison Country teacher. He taught his children and the other children in his small neighborhood.

Summary:     This collection consists of two letters from Amon Delaughter to A. J. Coffee, the Chairman Board of Public Instruction of Madison County. In the first letter, DeLaughter expresses frustration that the Board of Instruction rescinded the order that granted public aid to the school he taught. He appealed for this decision to be reverted, pointing to specific articles and sections of the Constitution, to justify why he believed taking funds away from his small school was a violation of the Constitution and school law. In his second letter, he expressed further frustration with the matter of how public funding was being handled by the board, calling attention to Moseley Hall and his belief that they are not entitled to the amount of funding it receives.

General Note: Previously State Library of Florida Manuscripts Collection MS117, Madison County Board of Public Instruction, 1878. Original series title was Madison County Board of Public Instruction. After a careful review of the records, where archivists noted that the records were created by Amon DeLaughter and only referenced the Madison County Board of Public Instruction, the title was changed to more accurately represent the materials.
