Biographical/Historical:     After the surrender of General Robert E. Lee in April 1865, President Andrew Johnson issued a proclamation on May 29, 1865, to grant amnesty to former Confederate soldiers and individuals who aided in the rebellion. His proclamation granted amnesty with the restoration of all rights of property, excluding enslaved persons, on the condition of swearing loyalty to the United States. This proclamation did required that some people petition the President individually for pardon. President Andrew Johnson's Amnesty Proclamation was part of his efforts to honor President Abraham Lincoln's plan for a swift Reconstruction.

Summary:     This collection includes oaths of allegiance for citizens of North Florida, taken by the Provost Marshal of Tallahassee, Florida. These oaths of allegiance list the signee's name, county of residence, occupation, and the date they swore allegiance. Some entries also include the individual's complexion, height, hair color, and eye color. Also included is the individual amnesty oath of Whitmel R. Swain, signed August 20, 1865, in Leon County, Florida.
