Biographical/Historical:     John Somes Tappan (1811-1902) was a member of the notable Tappan family of Massachusetts.

Summary:     This collection includes a letter from John Somes Tappan to his cousin, Benjamin French, sent from the ship "Geneva" while at Mobile Bay on December 13, 1841. This letter details some of Tappan's experiences while traveling through Florida and Alabama. He mentions sailing to St. Marks and visiting Port Leon. He talks about visiting Tallahassee in great detail, including how the city had changed since his last visit.
