Biographical/Historical:     William James Purman, born in Millheim, Pennsylvania in 1840, was a prominent Republican politician from Florida. He was admitted to the bar in 1868, practicing in Tallahassee, Florida. Purman was a member of the 1868 Constitutional Convention, served in the Florida Senate from 1869 to 1872, and declined an appointment as the Secretary of State in 1869. He served in several other state political positions before serving two terms in the United States Congress from 1873 to 1877. After retirement, he moved to Washington, D. C. He passed away in 1928.

Summary:     This collection consists of a letter from William James Purman to Florida Supreme Court Judge James Bryan Whitfield on March 20, 1927. In his letter, Purman briefly discusses his experience working in Florida and in state administration and congratulates Whitfield for his work.
