Biographical/Historical:     Antonio "Tony" Proctor (c. 1743-1855) served as an interpreter between the United States government and Seminole tribes in the 1820s. He was enslaved at birth in Jamaica and brought to America to serve as a body servant to an English officer in the Seven Years War. He served in this position once again during the American Revolution, with some accounts placing him in Boston during the Tea Party and at the Battle of Lexington. After finishing his service, Proctor settled in St. Augustine and was either granted or purchased his freedom. He remained in Florida during each change of the territory's ownership and continued his military service under General Andrew Jackson during the Seminole Wars and other conflicts, as noted above. After his service ended, Proctor moved to Tallahassee to live with his son, George, in the early 1840s. At the time of his passing, he was estimated to be 112 years old.

Summary:     This collection consists of copies of records documenting Antonio "Tony" Proctor's service as an interpreter for the United States government in the 1820s and efforts to receive payment for his service. Also included in this collection is a typescript of a Florida Sentinel article regarding the death of Tony Proctor in Tallahassee, Florida, in 1855.
