Biographical/Historical:     Edwin Calvin Parkhurst (1819-1898) and his wife, Ellen Lanius Parkhurst (1817-1871), were from York County, Pennsylvania. In 1846, they went to Pensacola, Florida on a business trip during the Mexican-American War, returning home in 1847. Later in life, Edwin C. Parkhurst regularly visited Tarpon Springs, Florida during the winter months to benefit his health and visit with friends.

Summary:     This collection consists of letters from Edwin and Ellen Parkhurst sent to family members in Pennsylvania. Letters sent during a business trip to Pensacola, Florida in 1846 and 1847 discuss their experiences with traveling to and in Florida; the ongoing Mexican-American war, such as the Siege of Veracruz and celebration at the Navy Yard; and their arrangements for returning home. The letters from 1886 and 1897 discuss Edwin's regular trips to Tarpon Springs in the winter to help alleviate his asthma symptoms.
