Biographical/Historical:     Martha Ann Bott (1801-1874) married Samuel Parkhill, Jr. (1798-1841) in Virginia in 1817. Samuel purchased considerable tracts of land in Florida in the 1820s and 1830s, accumulating over 4,000 acres of land and recording 324 enslaved Black persons by 1840. He divided this land into three labor farms: Springwood, Lake Jackson, and Orchard Pond. When Samuel died without a will, Martha petitioned the courts and received one third of Samuel's property as his widow. Martha and Samuel had several children: John Bull, Richard, Samuel M., Robert Emmet, Katherine, Ann Marie, Victoria W., and Agnes. John Bull Parkhill served and died during the Third Seminole War.

Summary:     This collection consists of a letter from Martha Ann Parkhill to her mother, Mary (Beverley) Bott, in Manchester, Virginia, on May 5, 1833. This letter discusses family matters, including comparing living in Florida to living in Virginia. The collection also includes a poem, written in remembrance of Martha Ann Parkhill's son, Captain John Bull Parkhill, dated November 28, 1859.
