Biographical/Historical:     Samuel Augustus Palmer (1827-1918) was born in South Carolina. He came to Florida with his parents in 1829. In 1856, he married Mary Rebecca Gassaway and in Monticello, Jefferson County. Palmer enlisted in Company H, 3rd Florida Infantry Regiment on April 24, 1862. This unit fought in the western theater of the war. Union troops captured him on December 16, 1864 near Nashville, Tennessee and imprisoned him for the remainder of the war at Camp Douglas, Illinois. After the war, Palmer returned to Monticello and worked as a watchmaker.

    Mary Simpson Brown Archer (1821-1894) was the wife of Florida's first Secretary of State, James T. Archer. Her husband went on to hold numerous state offices during his political career before his death in 1859. After her husband's death, Mary continued to be active in local and state affairs.

Summary:     This collection consists of an oath of allegiance to the United States for Augustus Palmer of Jefferson County, Florida, dated June 19, 1865, and Mary S. Archer's food and medicine recipe book.
