Biographical/Historical:     John L. Inglis (1837-1917) was a prominent businessman and Civil War veteran in North Florida. He was born in England to Scottish parents and immigrated to America while he was young. Inglis fought for the Confederacy during the Civil War before settling in Madison, Florida, where he became a successful businessman. He married Louise Thomas and they had four sons and one daughter. Louise passed away in 1916; John passed away in Jacksonville, Florida on June 2, 1917.

    Inglis was a prominent figure in Florida's phosphate mining and trade. He founded the Florida Manufacturing Company in 1874 in Madison, Florida, and he served as president of the Dunnellon Phosphate Company. He also served in investment and leadership roles in the Port Inglis Terminal Company, which shipped much of Florida's phosphate, and the Barker Chemical Company. After his death, his stocks in the Port Inglis Terminal Company transferred to his only daughter, Louise Love.

Summary:     This collection consists of stockholder reports, business reports, and correspondence relating to the functions and management of the Dunnellon Phosphate Company, the Port Inglis Terminal Company, and the Barker Chemical Company under John Inglis. The reports continue under his daughter's name, Louise Love, after his death. The collection also includes marriage licenses, newspaper clippings, and several stock certificates for the Florida Fruit Exchange and the Luraville Phosphate Company.
