Biographical/Historical:     Washington Mackey Ives (1843-1925) was born September 29, 1843 in St. Augustine, Florida. In 1845, his family moved to the Lake City area. In the spring of 1862, Ives enlisted into the 4th Florida Infantry Regiment of the Confederate Army. He served in that unit for the majority of the Civil War and rose to the rank of Regimental Sergeant Major. After the war, he returned to Lake City, where he practiced law. Ives successfully ran for Mayor of Lake City in 1875, and then won election as County Judge in Columbia County in 1877. Ives later served as a member of the Constitutional Convention of 1885.

Summary:     This collection consists of original letters in which Washington Ives details his activities during the Civil War such as militia duties, movements of troops, and formation of various units for service in the Confederate Army. The letters also include his thoughts regarding his activities at the time. Photocopies of many of the fragile letters are available as use copies. The collection also includes materials regarding the Mattair Estate in Lake City, Columbia County, and the United Confederate Veterans.
