Biographical/Historical:     John Grattan Gamble (1779-1852) was an early settler and enslaver in the Territory of Florida. Born to a wealthy Virginia family, Gamble first traveled to Florida in 1826. After briefly returning to Virginia to gather his family, he established Waukeenah, an expansive labor farm in Jefferson County, in 1827. In the 1830s, Gamble helped found the Union Bank of Florida, which later failed, ruining him and many others financially.
Summary:     This collection includes a transcript of a letter from John Grattan Gamble in Waukeenah, Florida to Richard Keith Call on January 7, 1828. In the letter, Gamble discusses recent events in his life, including his work during planting season and recent political events. Dorothy Dodd transcribed the letter.
