Biographical/Historical:     John M. Galt lived in Virginia, where he went to school to be a physician. In 1842, U.S. President John Tyler appointed Galt into the U.S. Army Ordnance Department as a military shopkeeper. He served at Augusta Arsenal in Georgia and Apalachicola Arsenal in Florida. Later, he joined the Confederate Army as Major in the Commissary Department and commanded the post at Lynchburg, Virginia.

Summary:     This collection consists of a letter from John M. Galt to Arthur Emmerson, Esquire, in Portsmouth, Virginia. Galt sent the letter from the Apalachicola Arsenal in Chattahoochee, Florida on April 30, 1845. The letter discusses general details about Galt's life, family, and current events.
