Biographical/Historical:     John Otto Fries (1838-1931) was a Swedish immigrant who settled in Orlando, Florida in 1871. He was a civil engineer who became the surveyor for Orange, Brevard, and St. Lucie counties. He later worked as a United States Surveyor and conducted the first census of the Seminole Tribe of Florida in 1900.

Summary:     This collection consists of two undated letters John Otto Fries wrote to S. A. Robinson, Esquire. Writing from Orlando, Florida, J. O. Fries discusses his knowledge and opinions about specific lands in Brevard County. Fries includes information about the township and range numbers, geographical features of the land, previous work done to the land, the faming potential of the land, and estimated value per acre. The collection also includes a transcript of both letters.
